M88 with 73 lock and plate, replacement

Posted by James on Monday, 11 October 2021, at 3:56 p.m.

Hi all, I picked up a M1888 serial 589996 which I believe means it was manufactured in 1893. It is fitted with a 1873-dated lock and breechblock. It shoots just fine by I assume this is a put together rifle but I do wonder why someone would swap older parts onto it, presumably due to wear... PEverything else on the rifle is correct and in good condition and it has a good bore. I am thinking of swapping the lockplate and breechblock with a correct pairing, mainly because there is a notable offsetgap between the hammer and the block, both angle and distance. I can source a 1884 lockplate but not breechblock. I see Al has a stripped M84 breechblock. My question is - will the parts from my 73 breechblock fit into the 84 block, or will I need to source springs, screws, ejector and a firing pin from somewhere else PI am no expert on these so if this is a bad idea and I should leave it as is, please tell me now before I go down a rabbit hole Thanks in advance.
