Re 1870 receiver barrel markings

Dennis, your guess is as good as mine Im beginning to think that the 1870 deserves rather more respect as a mystery gun than it gets. There are all sorts of reported anomalies which have surfaced over the years. Since yours sounds near mint, well probably have to excuse Bubba in this case - so what was SA doing I had never heard about the trials rifles being rehabilitated, but that would certainly help to explain two things - their great - if under-appreciated - rarity, AND the occurrence of 76|76 and 77|77 in the distinctive 1868 SA font, in one fell swoop. The early block on a later gun has no explanation beyond the oft-ignored truism that they were making useful tools, NOT for one millisecond worrying about what unborn collectors might think.
