1873 fake Carbine

Posted by David Miesbach on Wednesday, 16 September 2020, at 9:35 a.m.

I came across a fake carbine and have many questions. First of all, the stock is a cut down rifle stock. The serial number on the receiver is 2452. It has a high arch breach block with 1873 and the eagle with crossed arrows and case colored like new. The lock plate is also marked 1873 but has the wrong hammer and 3 clicks, not 2. The barrel, butt plate and trigger guard have been re-blued. It has an early carbine rear sight but the front sight is homemade. There are so many things that dont make it a carbine, but all parts seem to be Springfield, some even carbine and it shoots good. My question is this Can you tell by the serial number if it was manufactured as a rifle or a carbine Thanks for your time.
