US Springfield Trap Door Info

Posted by Terry Choate on Wednesday, 9 September 2020, at 6:48 p.m.

I bought a US Springfield rifle over the weekend without knowing anything about them at all. It just really got my attention at an antique store. I paid 800 for it and now I wonder if I did ok or not. It says US Springfield 1863 on the side, 1870 Model US on the trapdoor, US CE 23 on the buttstock plate, and there is a ďuĒ on the things that hold the stock and barrel together. There is no serial number or markings on the stock. What I was told, after buying it is that the metal has been quotwire brushedquot. It does look wire brushed as its smooth but shinier than other rifles Iíve seen. Also I was told it was a 45-70 but now see itís a 50-70. Not sure if the 50-70 makes it better or worse. Anyway I was told that the fact that it was brushed makes it worth way less. My question is did I at least get a fair price or should I take it back I would posted pics but couldnít figure out how to do it. PThank you
