Sounds like you mean the receiver, the part that the barrel screws into and holds the breechblock. The threads on these were never tapered, but there are two different barrel tennons. Early barrels are squared off at the back and later ones are rounded. Late barrels will screw into early receivers, but not vise versa, unless you round off the square corner. You dont really want to do that since good early barrels are hard to find. Also, late receivers are wider than the early ones and will not fit into early stocks. What is the serial number at the back of the receiver PIf this isnt the problem, check that the threads in the new receiver are clean. Replacement parts were packed in grease, which gets very hard after 125 years. It can be pretty difficult to clean it all out.
