Re: 7th cavalry quarter Master Records

Cpt. Otho Michaelis was an Ordnance officer assigned to the Military Department of the Dakota in January 1876. He served as the chief ordnance officer under Terry and accompanied the Terry Expedition to the LBH in 1876 and served in that assignment until 1880. He was with Terry's column when it arrived at the LBH battle site and he inspected the arms, ammunition and equipment of the 7th Cavalry....that of the remaining solders and that equipment of the dead that was found.

His reports dated Sept. 29th. 1886; December 31st, 1877, April 15th, 1878 and September 30th, 1879 to the Chief of Ordnance is enlightening as it thoroughly debunks many of the myths and misconceptions regarding the arms, ammunition and accouterments of the 7th Cavalry and of the other Army participants. Unfortunately for us he lists no serial numbers in those reports that I am aware of.
