Welcome to the Trapdoor world!

There is no documented history on 477488, which is not unusual.

All the nearby numbers are for standard Model 1884 rifles.

Plus or minus 500 numbers from yours we find associations with various volunteer units during the Spanish American War/Philippines insurrection era. Units include" 4th Pennsylvania; 14th Minnesota; 3rd Texas; 1st U.S. Volunteer Infantry (not the 1st Vol Cavalry Rough Riders); 51st Iowa; 1st Illinois and 1st Tennessee. There is also one noted as one donation to the U.S. Navy in 1943.

It is possible your rifle went with one of those units and records for one or more companies no longer exist. It is also possible that it hid in a crate in some armory and did nothing exciting at all. We will never know for sure.
