Coned firing pin question

Posted by D Miller on Wednesday, 17 July 2019, at 11:45 a.m.

I have recently encountered an 1873 Cadet with serial number 67085 that has a “coned” head firing pin. There is a discussion in Al’s #II book on page 159 about these firing pins, breech block comb height and the changes made to the thumb latch firing pin guard. These changes were made to eliminate discharges with a breech block not being properly latched. This cadet has the high comb breech block and the third type thumb latch. I assume the firing pin ended up in the rifle sometime in its past. I guess my question is were these coned firing pins only used while the unlatched discharges were being addressed? How rare are they?
