Color of slings

Posted by Stephen B. McCartney on Thursday, 7 February 2019, at 7:49 p.m.

Why were 19th century through post WWII leather slings of russet colored? All other finished leather goods were issued black until circa 1902-1904 when the new khaki and o.d. uniforms became standard and russet became the issue for leather items. Black came back with the 1957 change from olive drab. I've have an M1887 holster in russet (probably, for National Guard/militia)and an M1911 holster dyed, not too well, black.
