True, but the clean-out hole is THE key.

Not only is it unique to rifle stocks, it is ALSO post-1879, meaning that the entire wrist and comb of that stock has been diddled, which then explains the odd-looking cartouche - which would NEVER be correct on a stock late enough for the c/o hole. The closer you look, the worse it gets.
