In 1998 I wrote, for Man At Arms, a very extensive article on Put-Together-Trapdoors. That article is many pages long and lists the thousands of rifle and carbine barrels that Springfield sold to Remington, Whitney, Wm Trabune, U.S. Cartridge Co, and H.Boker. Take a look at the article because it also lists all the items that Springfield sold at auction in 1870.
At the end of the article, I list a number of parts guns that Dick Brannum and I had seen, many of which have the five land barrel and quite a spred of serial numbers indicating that Springfield did not do the assembly.
