Springfield 1893

Posted by Steve on Thursday, 16 June 2011, at 3:59 p.m.

I have inherrited a Springfield 1893, 45-70 cal.the barrel length is at least 31+",the entire stock is painted black (my guess was to control glare). The paint appears to be an enamel base which could be removed easily with a laquer base thinner and a soft cloth. It has the flip up rear site, no ram rod, sling bails missing on the front. Bore in very good condition, over all in very good condition. First question is should I remove the black paint? Second, the only marking I could find appears to be the s.s. #312983, can't see through the paint to detect stock markings.

Please advise, thanks.
