Re: Barrel fit, was end of a long search

Ernie, and others - this may come as a shock; I have only participated in ONE barrel swap, and that was about 30 years ago. No - I haven't used your clamps yet, but am looking forward to doing so, in putting together some parts for sale, strictly as shooters.

I have only been TOLD that the barrels all thread up, so am guilty of passing info which I have not physically verified. I do own an 1868 receiver with a MINT .45-70 barrel, which I always planned to make into a fancy target rifle.

Of course, pre-1878 square shank barrels would not fit late receivers without some relieving, but, AFAIK, ANY barrel will seat in an EARLY receiver, since there would be no interference. As to whether they would index, that might be subject to individual quirks, but should be close.

PLEASE - if someone knows the above to be incorrect, let's get it out in the open right away!
