I see that I did not address all of your questions - the caliber is almost certainly .45-70, for which ammunition is currently available.

HOWEVER, since these arms made from salvaged parts were NOT proof tested by SA, and were in fact basically intended for drill only, inspection by a qualified gunsmith, as well as use of low-power ammo - would be very prudent.
