For Larry Sunday, re Japan Wax

Posted by Ken on Monday, 14 June 2010, at 9:11 p.m.

Hi Larry, I got my shipment of Japan wax today, all 2 pounds of it. So I spent some time today playing with it. Here is what I have found out. First, this stuff is hard and crumbly, but has a greasy feel to it. I would describe it as a bar of soap. I shaved it with a knife and melted 2 ounces in a pyrex measuring cup placed in a pan of water on the stove. It melts fairly easily, before the water boils. Once hard again, it is crumbly and dry feeling, so I decided to alloy olive oil with it. Now the fun started. I put 2 teaspoons of olive oil into the melt thinking this will soften it up, and poured it directly into my lubersizer. That was the wrong thing to do, at least this early in the trials. It was so hard it would not go through the sizer. Did you ever barbeque a lubersizer? Well I did, and it worked. I just built a very small fire with about a half a dozen briquets and put the sizer on the grill to melt out all the lube. No damage, so long as you turn and baste regularly, and not let it get too hot. I finally wound up with a 2 ounce melted Japan wax and 4 teaspoons olive oil to get it to go through the sizer. It is still a little tough, but I am still experimenting, a teaspoon at a time. The bullets sized and lubed well this way, but I still want to ease up on the effort to turn the ram in the sizer. So far all looks good. I will give you a report on how they shoot next. That will be in the next couple of weeks. This time with Swiss powder. Let me know how you are doing. Regards Ken
