1880 Triangular Rod Bayonet Rifle, SN157807
1880 Triangular Rod Bayonet Rifle, SN157807
This Model 1880 rifle is cartouched SWP/1881, which is the correct production date. The rifle
has an oval cut in the butt plate and a single circled P firing proof which indicates late 1881 production.
About 1000 of these
rifles were produced in 1881. It has all the characteristics of an M80 rifle produced in that year. For example,
the front blade looks similar to the Buffington front blade, but slightly different in shape.
This was to compensate for the heavier weight near the muzzle. The sight is retained with slotless screws
indicating the sight has not been removed since Springfield installed it.
The barrel is a gray/blue color. There is some surface pitting on the barrel near the muzzle.
The bore is almost pristine new with deep shiny rifling.
