Re: 7th cavalry quarter Master Records

Posted by Stephen B. McCartney on Wednesday, 18 September 2019, at 7:19 p.m., in response to 7th cavalry quarter Master Records, posted by LTC Tim Godwin on Wednesday, 18 September 2019, at 3:20 p.m.

Quartermaster had nothing to do with weapons. Any surviving quarterly ordnance returns cease in the first quarter of 1876 (March 31, 1876). What became of any and all returns after that date appears to be a moot point as they do not seem to have survived. We are fortunate in having what we have as the way records of all government departments were kept and stored was atrocious. The National Archives and Records Administration's (NARA) establishment in the 1930's barely came in time.
