1. Make sure the trigger is hanging free and not stuck all the way back. Push trigger forward to be sure it is not engaging the sear. 2. After that you may need to carefully remove the lock while trying to hold the hammer back. If the hammer falls all the way forward while doing this, you will probably chip some wood off the bottom of the lock mortise. 3. With the lock removed, check for: -- Sear spring not engaging due to broken screw or screw backed off enough to allow the stud on the side of the sear spring to slip out of the little slot in the lockplate -- Nose of the sear broken off -- Notch on the tumbler broken off (but the carbine with both three notches should still have one or more notches working).
