Long range shooitng

Has anyone tried the Texas Grip, where one lies on one's back? It's in the period manuals, such as Blunt's. It sorta looks kinda kinky. An interesting comment by the venerable McBride, mentions in the classic, A Rifleman Went to War. is that the National Guard/militia of circa 1905 (I'm guessing)fired from the prone position straight on and not at an angle. He felt, if memory serves me of my reading, that that old style position did not absorb the recoil as well the angled position. Could this be a case of law of physics?
