I think I would eventually like to pick up a carbine, just to have a trapdoor in both rifle and carbine configuration.

My "holy grail", however, would be a M1868 or M1870 that had a connection to the 1872/1873 Modoc War in Northern California (the relevant US Army units were the 21st Infantry, 4th U.S. Artillery, and 1st Calvary - though the 1st Cav carried Sharp's and Spencer carbines into the conflict, I believe). The likelihood of ever finding one is, I know, next to nothing. The closest I have come is a *very* rough example for sale by McPheeters Antique Militaria. Its provenance is pretty compelling, and was purportedly taken from the Modocs after the conflict. He is asking $6500 for the rifle (as well as related ephemera). My wife would literally murder me (probably with one of the trapdoors) in my sleep if I purchased that, lol.
