Well I respectfully disagree. Black powder is the only way to go and is very easy to clean if you load the cartridges correctly. I shoot BPTR NRA matches up in Rhode Island with Frank Monikowski out to 300 yards where BP is the only propellant allowed and the rifles (sometimes Trapdoors) are tack drivers.

As far as the Wolf books goes, that is the source IF you ONLY want to replicate MILITARY type rounds.

If you want to shoot range rounds you have to get one of Mike Venturino's books on BPCR.

Also for best results, you should cast your bullets. If you just want to hear a boom and watch rounds hit anywhere, then smokeless factory rounds (made for old rifles) are fine.
