Also, unrelated to my initial query, but I found it interesting: In reading about the 1868s, I came across "McPheeters Antique Militaria" site. He is selling what he claims is a M1868 with a direct connection to the Modoc War (along with some other items associated with the conflict) for $6500. The rifle, serial numbered 8969, is extremely rough. The seller claims it was taken from the Modoc. I always wonder how one could verify such claims. The offered proof seems slightly tenuous, but what do I know.
