I spoke with Al this afternoon after posting - Great guy. He took a look at the rifle I was considering and identified some issues with it. He also noted that the 1868s are becoming a bit more rare.

I am thinking my better bet may be to get a nice M1873. While not historically connected to the conflict I have an interest in (the Modoc War, where the US units were equipped with both M1868s and M1870s), it is the spiritual successor to those rifles and similar in operation. They also seem to be more common, and since Al has some available, I won't have to worry about the provenance!
