1873 Trapdoor, just purchased.

Posted by Park McKellop on Tuesday, 28 November 2017, at 3:02 a.m.

Based on the SN (28xxx), it was probably made around Oct, 1874. The guy I bought it from thinks it was arsenal refinished, to add the Buffington sight. Unfortunately, it has a modern stock on it, and was cut down to a barrel length of 24", which is 2" longer than the carbine. He thinks that might have been done in the early 20thC, when a lot were sold as surplus.

It has NJ stamped on the side of the receiver, so he thought it might have been in the NJ militia for a time. It also has a couple Ds with numbers, which from my reading would have been the rack number for where they were stored.

The metal is in good shape, and I bought a box of cowboy load 45-70 for it.

Is there anything else that I can learn about this specific gun?
