Re: Us Springfield Trap door

Hello Roy,

Mr. Hosmer will correct me if i'm wrong, and I welcome the corrections. But:

What you have is a Model 1873 Trapdoor Springfield. There were only two official Model designations for the Trapdoor rifle. Lots of variations on these models but she's still a Model '73. Unless by some twist it is a rebuilt rifle for the Pam Am war. What date is stamped on the front of the Breech Block?? What is the reason you think it is a model '76?

Year of Manufacture of the Receiver is 1882. 3rd Qtr. Last Serial number for the Qtr. is 185569. The "cartouche" on the left side of the stock just behind the rear lock plate screw "shuold" read 1882.

Checking the rifles authenticity is a "hands on" process. There are numerous things to verify the rifle that cannot be done here.

You can check the Gun Auctions like Gunbroker.com, etc. to see what others are asking for their rifles.

Welcome to the Trapdoor world,

Ernie
