Sounds like quite the "mixmaster", and definitely not anything that SA did. Interchangeability is at once the blassing and the curse of TD collecting.

To answer your last question, I THINK that Model 1870 and early 1873 barrels and receivers may be interchanged at will in any combination. The 1868 is a different animal entirely.

That said, I do have a MINT .45-70 barrel mounted in an 1868 receiver which I've been planning (for at least 35 years) to build into a shooter, but have no idea what might have been done to achieve the fit-up. Perhaps there is a blank tenon which EXACTLY matches the difference in receiver nose lengths?
