I was reading Don Klinko's thoughts on cleaning, and take down of the Springfield rifle. He states that the required complete take down, and over cleaning resulted in the turn in of the worn guns, and issue of new weapons. Was this done on a scheduled basis? If so how often would it have been? Every 4 years? 5 years? I ask because in trying to look up a serial number in the SRS I see that it looks like CO L, and CO I of the 7th Cavalry were issued new arms in April, and July of 1888.... Any thoughts?
