Help with extractor plunger

Posted by Jason Clements on Saturday, 14 October 2017, at 11:25 a.m.

Hi, I've recently picked up an 1888 with a weak extractor. I ordered a spare spring and plunger, then I dissassembled it today. I found that a previous owner had substituted a shorter weaker spring and what appeared to be a cut down plunger/spindle.

I attempted to fit the genuine replacement parts, but there is no way it will fit.

I've looked inside the hole the plunger/spring assembly sits in and I can see a raised lump of metal in there.

I suspect that at some point in the past the plunger/spindle has snapped off in there and all I can see is the remains of the spindle.

Can anyone confirm if inside the oval hole where the spring/plunger/spring sits has another smaller hole at the bottom of it? If it does, I suspect I'll have to find a gunsmith to drill out the remain of the old assembly if it is what I think it is.

Can anyone help?

Thanks.
