Early M73 Rifle Rods

Another tidbit from Charlie Pate:

Al, are you aware of the Springfield Armory changing the diameter of the ram rod head in late 1875? Apparently it was due to the concern about damaging the bore of the rifle, but Im not sure since I have not yet seen the full document. The summary of it said the diameter was reduced to 4/100 of an inch but they must have meant reduction by 4/100 of an inch. This probably was when they changed the number of cannelures but Ive not seen anyone mention a reduction in the diameter of the head.

Charlie, you are right, there are two different diameters for the heads of the early Type I rods for the M73. It looks like there is about a 0.030" difference. 0.432" 0.429" 0.404" 0.403"
