I do agree that 3 of Gibbon's infantrymen will cut off and killed prior to LBH and it is probable that Indians captured all 3 of those men's rifles. However, as to your comment that infantrymen were involved in later battles in the Great Sioux War campaign and we can assume some of the rifles of those infantrymen were also captured, I think that is a risky assumption. I know of none of Miles 5th infantry having been cut off and killed, nor of any of Crook's infantrymen being likewise captured/killed and subject to their rifles being acquired thusly. Probably the most likely scenario for any further Sioux/Cheyenne acquiring any more 45-70 rifles would be one/some that one of Crook's infantrymen may have "discarded" his to lighten his load during Crook's Starvation March toward the Black Hills that fall.
