thanks john and larry. you're right the only way i could see if it were used is the test fire on the off hand chance that a cartridge was found. can you do that without gunpowder? anyways i do know for sure that my grandpa bought it from an old indian by himself from the area who just wanted money to eat. dick said the breach block looked original so the pin should be too. like i said earlier my dad spent a whole summer cleaning it and even reblued it which i know was a mistake. given the area it was purchased and the sn range i still like it as a conversation piece. would an army soldier have brought a mixmaster riffle to battle because dick said the hammer, lock, stock, and cleaning rod are upgrades. again thanks to everyone here for some much expert information.
