NO!!! That is NOT how it worked.

Springfield Armory would NEVER have put late parts on an old receiver.

John S. has, perhaps, given you the best advice - treasure the rifle as a memory of your grandpa, and FORGET about the Indian and his LBH fairy tale.

Also, which "Springfield" did you plan to contact? The Armory closed in 1968, and the site is administered by the National Park Service. I have been building an acquaintance with the present curator, but the records are all in the National Archives. The commercial firm (who stole the name "Springfield Armory") located in Geneseo IL, knows NOTHING. There is the "Springfield Research Service in Cabin John MD, but they will only provide info on numbers they have already found - they do not go to the archives looking for a number.
