Hello Russ. You stated that you have Joe Poyers book. Go to Appendix D and it will cover how to dissemble and clean your rifle. As for the sling - Pecards Leather Dressing is the best. Is the leather flexible enough to remove the sling without causing further cracking or breakage? If it is to stiff to remove work Pecards into the folds and button holes. Don't get in a hurry. Let it set for a few days before trying to remove it. Continue with the Pecards after you get it off. Hope this helps
