One of my VMI Brother Rat's has a rifle that his great great grandmother took from a Yankee soldier (husband was away in the service) that she killed when he came into her house intending to rape his great grandmother. They buried him under the front porch. My BR's brother used it in several reenactments. No telling where your rifle came from! "Cartouche" is the stamp on the left side of the stock just behind the trigger and which tells who and when the rifle was accepted and inspected by the Army. BTW my BR is Guy Humphrey Drewry III whose father and grandfather were well known Ordnance officers and whose initials (GHD) occur on the cartouche of some of the rifles that we love to research.
