Re: Model 1884 markings

This may have gotten buried on the board by some of the more active threads. I am mainly interested in these questions:

1 - Is there any way to look up my serial number, 505138, to find info about the rifle, such as approximate date of manufacture, what unit(s) it was issued to, etc? 2 - What might "E 9 38" (that's on three lines - E, then 9, then 38) stamped in big clear lettering, top back of the stock just in front of the buttplate, mean? Possible unit markings? 3 - Does anything else I listed raise any flags? Most of it looks like standard proofing and inspector marks to me, but curious if any mean, for example, arsenal refinished, or arsenal converted or anything of that nature.
