Thanks for sending the pictures. Nice rifle, not a lot of wear. Be careful not to chip the wood if you do takes it apart. Just don't use any more water-based cleaners! Leave it in the warm sun for a few days (to the extent you can) to assure that it gets DRY. After that, stick to oil-based stuff, and keep rubbing if you want.
I really don't see anything wrong with the color it is now, but that is just my taste. My specimen of that model does happen to have a fairly light stock, FWIW, but I bought it - back in 1970 - not because of that but because it was in nearly new condition.
