Michael, I believe it to be one of the first 5 or 6 rifles made of that design(!) and may have been shipped out west for use with a cavalry regiment. I have a 4 digit rifle, in correct configuration and close to 5th and 6th infantry SN#s, and appears to have been issued and carried. Of course we now know a number of early rifles went to cavalry regiments, around 68 of which were shipped to the 7th cavalry alone.

Michael, I think your rifle would be worth a premium. Congrats!
