1873 Springfield Trapdoor Rifle Serial Number 1681

Posted by Michael H. Collins on Saturday, 13 May 2017, at 10:26 p.m.

I picked up an early 1873 Springfield Trapdoor Rifle Serial Number 1681 a couple of years ago. This rifle is not documented and is in pretty rough shape. It's all there including the bayonet but shows some substantial pitting through out. It has all of the very early features as it should. Could this rifle be one of the first five 1873 rifles ever produced? Springfield only produced 5 rifles in 1873 and from what I've researched this one looks to be one of .I acquired it very inexpensively. The condition must have been the reason for the low price. The bore is darn nice. Recently, I added a first year production sling. It matches the gun because it's a bit rough too. Has anyone ever seen or handled a 1873 Rifle with a lower Serial Number? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Michael H. Collins
