Trapdoor shipping crate for M1888

Posted by John S. on Sunday, 30 April 2017, at 3:54 p.m.

If anyone wants a shipping crate there is one at a large antique mall in Verona, VA (about 5 miles north of Staunton just off I-81). This is located in the far back right corner of the 120,000 SF place.

The cover is present, but was turned over and hinges added by a later owner. Stencil on the end reads 20/ SPRINGFIELD ROD BAYONET RIFLES/ CAL .45 MODEL 1888/ MANFD FEB 1893. Stencils centered on the cover include: COMMANDING OFFICER./ ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL./ ROCK ISLAND/ ILL. and U.S. No. 14 WT 280 Lbs/ FROM/ SPRINGFIELD ARMORY/ NOV. 17TH 1893. Stencils on the left end of the cover read: LOT 2, U.S. NO. 41 WT. LBS/ SEARS ROEBUCK & CO./ CHICAGO,/ ILL. and down at the bottom: POST QR MASTER U.S.A.

Condition is pretty solid, but somewhat weathered and dirty. Implement pockets on the ends are in good shape but none of the packing blocks with slots and holes for butts and muzzles are present. Priced at $489.

These are fairly scarce and just wanted to let folks know in case anyone is interested.
