The guns the cavalrymen were carrying with Fetterman were not muzzle loaders from the Civil War, but they were 7 shot Spenser repeaters from the Civil War. There were about 27 Spensers lost to the Indians in that fight, assuming none were damaged during the fighting. The 50 or so infantrymen with Fetterman were indeed carrying muzzle loaders from the Civil War but those were Springfield .58 Cal muzzle loaders and of course, all of those were also lost.
