Nickeled Rifles

Posted by Michael H.Collins on Monday, 6 March 2017, at 9:52 p.m.

I am wondering if the experts here know how common or uncommon Nickel Guns are. I'm aware that a fair number of 1868 Rifles were Nickeled in the Serial Number Range from about 38,000 to 43,000. I have never held one myself but I recently acquired a complete receiver that has traces of Nickel on the exterior and the chamber looks to be almost completely nickeled. It resides dead center in this Serial number range. Also, I am wondering why they were Nickeled in the first place during that era? Thank you. Sincerely, Michael H. Collins
