Re: TD carbine wear

Possibly due to the introduction of the carbine boot in the early '80s to replace the socket used in the 60's and 70s. The boot certainly educed the amount of banging around the carbines experienced while hooked up via the sling to the trooper. Even with the boot, however, the carbine would still get subject to some wear so that is why when I was doing Indian Wars cavalry reenacting, I only used my true carbine for dismounted drill and inspections, and then used a cut-down rifle for mounted activities.
