John, I only heard of this procedure by word of mouth back in the 1960's. Since then, I have seen a number of these rifles, M84 and M88, at shows. I do not remember ever seeing a carbine torched in the chamber. It is interesting to note that the melting of the chamber metal in some cases almost gets to the wood, but the stock seems to never be damaged. I am sure the guns were not disassembled for this process, or we would seen the work of unskilled workers tearing them apart and putting them back together.
