Sorry, no documented history for 509788, but it is probably the rod bayonet model, and many (but not all) guns in that general range were used by volunteer units in the Spanish American War, especially from New York and Massachutts.

Some of these, especially NY guns, have unit markings neatly stamped or incised into the right side of the buttstock.

Hope that helps. These a fun old guns, and you should definitely think about shooting it sometime.
