Re: 1873 Springfield Rifle Serial Number

Don,

Production date for Receiver was July-Sept. 1882.

Last serial number for that Qtr. was 185569.

All that can be said for sure is that the "receiver" was produced in that Qtr.

Springfield did not have a production line as we know them today. Parts were not assembled on a "line". Craftsmen ( and their sons) assembled the arms in a series of operations. Receivers that were produced in one month may has been in the bottom of a basket and pulled out at a later date.

Your rifle "should" have a Cartouche on the left (off hammer) side. This will have a date and inspectors initials.

So, hopefully your arm will have an 1882 dating on the cartouche.

Ernie
