Hard to assign an order of preference. Oil was the original finish, so a super smooth, shiny stock, with pores filled is not right. The cheeks at the lock are the first things to go when a stock is sanded - you want them to be as crisp as possible. At least faint cartouches are nice, of course. It's a blend, really.
