Stock Finish - Model 1868

Posted by Bill Sturcke on Sunday, 16 October 2016, at 1:08 p.m.

Hi, I am trying to find a truly original M1868: my question is basically, how to know when a stock has been refinished. Stocks are frustrating to me because I see many variations. Some stocks seem to have been heavily varnished, some less heavily finished without filling all the grain and some seem to have an oil finish. Some are very smooth, some are pretty rough and some have no visible cartouche yet look otherwise original. I know there is no simple answer here but I would appreciate any thoughts or advise as to what to look for if I want one in original condition. Thanks - Bill
