The Adjutant-General's report for 1898 contains the following quotation in the Report of General Inspector of Rifle Practice: "The Springfield rifle, with which the Guard was armed in the fall of 1897, caliber .45, proved to be much better than the larger .50 caliber [i.e. Remington] which it superseded...."
