My 1888 trapdoor serial #525855

Posted by Vince Knapp on Tuesday, 11 October 2016, at 3:08 p.m.

I have a Model 1888 (serial#: 525855, 1892 cartouche, “7” [R] and “7” / “488” [L]).

My question is does anyone else have an old style “7” stamped rifle and has been able to identify which state regiment this is. I had hoped that the 7 was the 7th Infantry Regiment (New York Guard) but research has them using Remington ‘Rolling Block’ rifles at least through 1899.

My research has uncovered two others with the “7” stamp: • Serial number: 517858, 1892 cartouche. “7” [L], similar but smaller number “7” above “695” [R] • Serial Number: 539495. 1892 cartouche, "7" [L] and "7/523" [R]

I have also identified three M1888’s with 1892 cartouches issued to the NYS 5th, 9th, 12th and 13th regiments.

Of note but probably not remarkable is that I have found a number of rifles with higher serial numbers then mine but with 1891 cartouches.

Thanks in advance!
