Musings on Militia Cartridge Belts

Posted by Stephen B. McCartney on Tuesday, 11 October 2016, at 10:05 a.m.

The Chief of Ordnance reports are sparse on Google Books. There were up to 48 states and territories plus, D.C.) to issue to under the Militia Act of 1808 and its amendments. Here is what I found for several Fiscal Years (July 1-June 30):

1873-no issues, as the belts had not been developed

1875-ditto

1879-no issues

1880-558 cartridge belts, ca. 45

1883-400 cartridge belts and plates

1885-190 cartridge belts and plates

1888-150 cartridge belts and plates

As to weapons, by the late 1870's, .45 weapons were being issued but the majority were still .50-70's. For the Texas frontier force, I opine that the homemade thimble belt in .50-70 would be correct.
